Santorum Santorum Says of the Day: On today’s Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer asked presidential candidate Rick Santorum to clarify his controversial statement from yesterday, that “free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions.”
But rather than double back, Santorum instead chose to double down, saying that certain types of prenatal testing that are used to detect fetal abnormalities should not be offered for free as they “encourage abortions.”
“We’re talking about specifically prenatal testing and specifically amniocentesis,” Santorum said, “which is a… procedure that creates a risk of miscarriage when you have it and is done for the purposes of identifying maladies of a child in the womb, which in many cases, in fact, most cases, physicians recommend, particularly if there’s a problem, recommend abortion.”
A study conducted in 2006 by researchers at Mouth Sinai found that the risk of miscarriage from amniocentesis — a procedure necessary for the detection of chromosomal abnormalities (such as Down syndrome) and fetal infections — is 0.06%. In fact, there was no difference in “loss rate” between patients who had undergone amniocentesis, and those who had not
Santorum, whose daughter was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Edwards syndrome, took issue with President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which guarantees free-of-charge access to prenatal testing.
I can’t even put into words how much I despise this man, and how much it terrifies me that there are people who actually support him.
He is running on a platform of misogyny. His desire to control the bodies and lives of women is pathological. Out of all the problems in this country, we’re focusing on birth control? We’re focusing on abortion? What? He has the right to religious freedom and he’s free to believe whatever he wants, but the moment he starts infringing on the freedoms of others is the moment he’s crossed the line. He wants to control and restrict the freedoms of women, homosexuals, anyone he whose lifestyle and choices he does not agree with. That’s not what America is supposed to be about. The idea that there are people out there who will actually vote for this piece of shit enrages me. People are free to think whatever they want. But so am I. I am entitled to make the decision to use contraception; I don’t want children, never have, probably never will. I am entitled to make decisions about my own life and body if I should end up pregnant; that would be between me and my partner, and no one else. And if I should end up pregnant and choose to carry the pregnancy to term, I am entitled to choose what is right for my and my baby, even if Rick Santorum doesn’t personally agree with it. There’s this old adage that Santorum could stand to take to heart: Your right to swing your fist ends where the other person’s nose begins.
I can’t believe this is actually a debate in this day and age. This guy is from the Dark Ages. He is insane. All he would do if he were elected into the White House would be to legislate the freedoms of women away, and ignore everything else. I mean, good god, now he’s taking issue with routine procedures like amniocentesis? What the hell? How is this a political issue at all? Especially when he is just making up science. His religion and personal beliefs do not equal science.
I hope he dies in a fire.
